Alpha Engine
Management
Advances in Engine Management Systems have been made possible by the
availability of electronic sensors, actuators and controls. The advances
that have been achieved in controlling driveability are as important as
the improvements in power and torque.
Accurate control of relevant criteria has maximised the width of power
bands, flatterned torque curves and transformed cold starting and warm
responsiveness.
These characteristics allow racing, rally and high performance engines
to be used much more easily and effectively by the driver.
Traditionally, engines have relied on static settings that could only
relate to ideal calibration at one engine speed with only a narrow band
of adjustment. One significant benefit of the engine management system
is that of reliability, when properly installed and when wiring is of
an appropriate specification.
Aldon has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field of carburettor
tuning and this has provided the unique basis for the supply and set-up
of engine management systems.
Full Alpha Engine Management
A typical 4 cylinder engine management kit contains :
• ALPHA Electronic Control Unit
• Two twin injector 40mm throttle bodies (DCOE type mounting flange).
• Comprehensive wiring harness
• Four electronic fuel injectors
• Four injector mounting kits (anti-vibration type)
• Inertia switch (road vehicle safety device)
• Ignition coil and amplifier control module
• Inlet air temperature sensor
• Engine coolant temperature sensor
• Engine speed sensor and trigger disc
• High resolution throttle position sensor (mounted on one throttle
body)
• Fuel pressure regulator (2.5 bar)
• Fuel filter and connector unions
• High Nitrile fuel hoses and clips
• Cold start extra air valve and mounting bracket, associated hosing,
manifolds and clips.
• Inlet trunking and clips (allows tuning of inlet tract lengths)
• Two air filter mounting flanges
• Comprehensive adjustable throttle linkage kit
Customer options: 38, 40, 45, 48 or 50mm throttle bodies. Static ignition
(distributorless system). Capacitive discharge ignition (high energy).
Barometic pressure sensors (from 0 - 3 bar absolute) for altitude and
forced induction corrections. OE signal / timing pattern interface. High
pressure fuel pump. Fuel injectors available in various fuel rates. Fuel
pressure regulator with threaded unions. Uprated and competition type
throttle linkages.
IGNITION ONLY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS (2D AND 3D)
Aldon can supply a comprehensive selection of Alpha ignition only management
systems. Each system is fully programmable with the option to have three
dimensional ignition timing.
Option 1: Distributor Systems
This is a 16 point distributor ignition management system and can be supplied
for installations that do or do not utilise the original equipment engine
speed sensor and trigger disc. Covers 4,6 and 8 cylinder applications.
Kits contain:
• Alpha Ignition Only Management ECU
• Ignition coil and amplifier control module
• Wiring harness and cable ties
• Inlet air temperature sensor
An engine speed sensor will be supplied in the kits for installations
which cannot utilise the original equipment. Additional requirements will
also be a trigger disc, speed sensor and engine speed sensor bracket.
Option 2: Distributorless system
The wasted spark/ static ignition option utilises the Alpha ignition only
management ECU’s and suitable double ended coil packs. The management
ECU can provide wasted spark/ static ignition control for 2 + 4 cylinder
engines. Again these can be supplied for installations with or without
and original equipment engine speed sensor and trigger disc.
Kit contains:
• Alpha Ignition Only Management ECU
• Ignition amplifier control modules x 2
• Wiring harness and cable ties
• Ballast resistors x 2
• Inlet air temperature sensor
An engine speed sensor will be supplied in the kits for installations
which cannot utilise the original equipment. Additional requirements will
also be a trigger disc, speed sensor and engine speed sensor bracket.
3D IGNITION SYSTEMS
The full potentional of the ignition only
management system can be achieved by using
three dimensional ignition timing.
With the addition of a throttle position sensor
all of the kits listed above will be capable of
providing three dimensional ignition timing
utilising a fully interpolated 16 x 16 load
versus engine speed ignition map (256 points).
Engine load is obtained from a throttle potentiometer
mounted to the carburettor butterfly shaft.
N.B.
Alpha Ignition management systems are supplied with a safe base ignition
map, ideal for starting the engine and checking correct fitment. However,
each system installation must be calibrated by an Alpha system dealer
such as Aldon, to obtain the maximum benefit from programmed ignition
timing.
