| Why Foam? At the heart of the unique Pipercross air filter is specially developed polyurethane foam, which acts as the filtration medium, having both higher performance and life expectancy than paper. Pipercross reticulated foam is created by a chemical reaction, it is then placed in a gas filled combustion chamber where a controlled explosion burns away any complete cell walls in the material to form a skeletal cellular structure which is strictly quality controlled. This process, which is specified by Pipercross, ensures that the foam consists of tiny open cells, which trap contaminants. The cell size of the foam, its porosity, is measured in Pores Per Inch (PPI). Pipercross air filters use up to six layers of foam with varying porosity descending in pore size in the direction of airflow. The Pipercross filters long life span is due to the dirt storage capacity of the foam cells and the filters construction, which means no air passage is blocked until all the cells in a layer of foam are completely filled. It is designed to hold contaminants in the filters outer layer, inner layers act as a secondary measure to ensure an exceptionally high level of engine protection.
The Pipercross Vector Filter is a higher performance filter. Available as part of an induction kit or as a universal application. This filter unit flows more air due to its unique inlet design. The inverted cone directs the air straight into the 150mm full radius rampipe base. This action reduces turbulence in the centre of the filter unit, allowing the air to move faster and more efficiently into the engines inlet. This will normally produce 1-3 bhp more than a standard flat end-cap filter.
The technology used in the VIPER was first seen on the Lotus 340R, but
Pipercross are making it available for an ever increasing range of popular
road cars. The carbon fibre heat shield protects the air charge from under bonnet
heat keeping it cool -and therefore more dense -thus introducing more
oxygen into the combustion mixture, giving increased power. The physics involved may sound a little complicated but the increase
in power using a VIPER against a standard air box will be immediately
evident. Just as obvious will be the VIPER's stunning looks - the carbon
fibre heatshield connecting the polished alloy inlet to the 150mm rampipe
will be the focal point of any engine bay! Pipercross replacement air filters are manufactured in multi-laminated open cell patented reticulated polyurethane foam.
The vortex-designed outer surface area will absorb large amounts of airbome
dirt particles, while still allowing air to flow freely. Inner layer/red
foam matrix continues to retain finer dirt particles, so offering maximum
engine protection. |
